The Vegan Festival on Saturday 1 November 2008 was our very first outing - and what a lovely reception we had! The idea behind PAWING was received very well and plenty of leaflets were handed out to interested visitors to the fair. With PAWING christmas cards, cat-related gifts, DVD's and books for sale, our stall was bustling with activity. It was lovely to meet so many like-minded people and hear their stories of animals they have rescued and the circumstances behind many of these rescues - once more showing how much PAWING can help those who have nobody to turn to. The incredible story behind Poppy's rescue pulled on many heartstrings and everyone who commented said how needless her 'near death' was because she could have easily been rehomed. If you haven't yet read Poppy's story, she has a page of her very own on our website - just click on Poppy's Story in the menu bar. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to those who stopped to chat and learn about our work and everyone who made purchases. A massive thanks also goes to everyone who made donations to help us continue to help those who give their all to help animals. Thank you! A further thank you goes to everyone who took part in the competition to win a beautiful Sherratt & Simpson black and white cat. The questions are shown below with the correct answers: How many stray dogs were put to sleep in the whole of the UK in 2007? a) 5,287 b) 6,789 c) 7, 892 The answer is C. Whilst this figure does include sick and injured dogs, it is still far too high. The answer is to rescue - never buy. There are countless excellent rescues from which adoptees can get support and information about their rescued dog. If you are still unsure, check out theDog's Trust website for more information on just how rewarding it is to open your home to an unwanted dog! What is the commonest bird in the world? a) Sparrow b) Domesticated Chicken c) Seagull The answer is B. Although this figure varies, there are around 10 billion domesticated chickens in the world. To put this into perspective, there are more chickens than people on the planet! A massive proportion of this figure is down to factory farming - millions of chickens are, as you read this, living in appalling conditions and suffering violent deaths to satisfy our desire for 'healthy' eating and cheap eggs - but if you really want to eat a healthy diet, meat and dairy isn't the answer! Please, please -go vegan today and help reduce this shocking figure! In the space of just 5 years, an unspayed female cat can be responsible for how many descendants? a) 20,000 b) 30,000 c) 40,000 The answer is A. Although this is the lowest of the three figures, it still shows how vital the work of volunteers within the UK feral cat communities really is. One report has said that we would be overrun with over 7 million cats if nobody cared! Thankfully, many do - if you help feral cat communities, PAWING wants to hear from you! Guinea Pigs do not produce a vital vitamin. This means they need it in their food. Which vitamin is it? a) Vitamin A b) Vitamin B c) Vitamin C The answer is C. Guinea Pigs need to eat food that has Vitamin C as a supplement. They also particularly enjoy broccoli, parsley and carrots - although carrots only have a low amount of vitamin C! Our warm congratulations go to J Tomlinson who was amongst those who got all of the answers right and was successful in the draw - your lovely cat is now on it's way to you! Many thanks to Louise from Greyhound Action for drawing our winner! We can not end our little Festival report without giving a massive thank you to the wonderful organisers of this fantastic event. Well done to you all and we look forward to next year's event! Last, but not least. Our stall was dedicated to the memory of Walter Stewart. Many thanks and our kindest regards to Mr K Stanley who sent PAWING a kind donation in Walter's memory.
